Tips on how to stay mentally healthy during COVID-19

Due to covid-19 the whole world is struggling. It has affected people’s businesses, disrupted students’ education, and took a toll on our physical and mental well-being. Where the economic and health issues are openly discussed, unfortunately it is not the same case for mental health. Therefore, it is crucial that we pay attention to our mental health too and be more vocal about such issues.

Having to always stay at home with little to no possibilities of going out, lack of social interaction with friends, stress due to the pandemic, are factors that affect our mental health.

Today we are sharing a few tips with you hoping that it will help you and your loved ones stay mentally healthy.

  • Being physically active:

Physical activity plays a vital role in impacting our mental health. Exercising causes our body to release endorphins, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These help boost our mood and reduce stress, giving us an overall good feeling. Don’t let closed gyms stop you. There are plenty of ways you can workout at home too.

  • Stay connected through the internet:

People are quarantined away alone at home; some are stuck in faraway cities and countries missing their friends and families. At times like this, the internet comes as a boon connecting us with our loved ones. Make sure to check up on your friends and families from time to time to see if they are doing fine. You can even set up a virtual game time over the internet with friends.

  • Have an outlet to vent

Sometimes we have too many frustrations, emotions, and thoughts trapped inside our head that brings our mood down and affects our mental health. It is not easy to hold it all on our own. Do not hesitate to approach someone who cares about you to talk your heart out. If sharing your heart out to someone is not easy for you, you can let it out through other means like writing it down in your journal, vent it out through poems, or artwork, or any other means that you find the best for you.

  • Be selective of what you watch

Our brain absorbs what we watch and hear. That is why we should be careful in selecting what we watch and hear. Watching too much negative news on TV, reading controversial topics, or negative people on social media can psychologically affect us. Try your best to stay from those or limit your exposure to them. Watch things that inspire and motivate you.

  • Pick a new hobby

An empty mind is home to the devil. Keeping yourself busy and occupied will save you from brooding and getting sucked into the world of negativity. You can try baking, stargazing, learning a new language, or a new kind of art. There are many resources available on the internet for you to learn from. For instance, you can try yoga and meditation too. It is really helpful in calming and relaxing your mind and body.

  • Spend time with family

Spending time with the family is a privilege that many cannot afford. Their love is unconditional. Due to the pandemic, you are not the only one who misses socializing with people and hanging out with friends. It’s also the same for your family too. So why not come together and have a fun family night filled with loads of fun games, barbeque party, and a movie night. Be it parents, spouse, siblings, kids, grandparents, or even the pets; everyone will be guaranteed to have a fun and refreshing time together.

  • Be Productive

Our goals being disrupted and plans falling apart is also among the reasons why many of us are getting anxious and feeling unsettled mentally. Out of boredom, we are wasting our time scrolling down pages on social networking sites. It is not really helping us in any way, instead adding to our anxiety. Being able to achieve something, no matter how small it is, will give you a sense of fulfillment. This is why instead of wasting time, try to be more productive. Even small tasks like making your bed after you get up in the morning, or doing the dishes after a meal is also an achievement.

  • Sleep well at night

Sleep is very important. It is the time when your body does all the healing. Having a good night’s sleep will not only make you feel refreshed but will also keep stress away. Waking up from a well-rested sleep will make you feel less anxious and dull.

  • Find a professional support

Lastly, mental health is not a topic to shy away from. If you feel depressed, alone, and have no one to talk to, do not ever hesitate to seek professional help.  At testing times like these even the strongest and the richest may feel helpless, so seeking help does not make you weak but makes you a warrior who wants to overcome.
